Over the years I have counseled many clients in taking deep breaths. How to breath deeply and the benefits of such a simple practice that is always available to you, any time, any place!!!

The dolphin in Native American teachings is representation of Manna, breath. The dolphin speaks to us of the breath of life. The human body can live weeks with out food, days with out water but only minutes with out breath, oxygen!!!

To the degree we are able to breathe, is to the degree we able to take in life. Breath is vital to our human existence.

Breath is our connection to Spirit, God, creator, Goddess. We all share the air around us!!! Imagine, as the fish within the oceans share the water, we as humans, and all the breathing life on our planet, share the air!!! We are all swimming in this beautiful ocean of Manna!!! Manna in the bible, meaning spiritual nourishment. All breathing life is connected by breath. All is connected energetically. (Topic for a future blog)

Breath is our connection to our own personal energies that thrive within our own human body!!! It is our personal monitor of our ability to relax or when we our unconsciously activated by something emotional or effected by external energies. We can use breath to activate specific energies within our bodies. One practice used by the yogis is alternate nostril breathing, taught often in yoga classes. You can also create specific attributes by a simple practice of creating dominate breathing from one nostril.

I invite you to try something now. Close your eyes, breath normally, slowly, noticing which nostril takes in more air. Right nostril is for focus, action, mental clarity. Left nostril is for intuition, relaxation, meditation. I would imagine that most people reading this blog are breathing more from the right, creating focus and attention on what you are reading.

Dominate Nostril Breathing:

You can shift your dominate nostril by 3 simple steps:

Lets open up the left nostril for calm and relaxation in the below description. Switch sides in description to activate the right nostril.

1) Placing your right finger on the right side, you would like to slow down to close off the entrance of air.

2) Breath out quickly and with a bit of force, 3 times, out of the open nostril, left. Let the snot fly :-)

3) Breath deeply out of the open nostril. Release your finger away from your nose. Breath normally.

Opening the left nostril is great before sleep, when you are choosing to relax and before or during meditation.

You can use this technique to open the right nostril for a quick reenergize of your body when needed before a meeting or important conversation. Anytime you want to create focus, analytical learning, action.

Another great breath exercise is 10-3-10 breath.

The 10-3-10 Breath:

1) Inhale for 10 seconds, expanding the abdomen first. Even if you have to fake (at first) your belly expanding and growing big. Then expand your ribcage, back, chest, even feel your shoulders expand with breath. Until you have been inhaling for 10 seconds. If you are not at 10 seconds yet, push a little more air into your lower lung, your upper lung. Filling every part of yours lungs as much as possible. Imagining your lungs are a series of small bright pink balloons that will fill with oxygen and life!!! If there is a part of your body or lung that does not expand readily, you can focus your breath into that specific spot to open that specific ballon.

2) Hold for 3 seconds. Allow the energy to permeate through your lungs and body. Allowing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

3) Exhale for 10 seconds, relaxing and mildly contracting your abdomen first. Then relax and release the air from your upper lung. Relaxing your whole body. However, you may not be at 10 seconds yet. Push all the air out of your lungs until you are making a sound of release and you complete your 10 second exhale.

Repeat a few times. No more than 10 rounds of this type of breath.

Wonderful practice before bed at night and meditation in the morning.

Take notice of your breath often. It is one of the ways your body speaks for your soul!!!

Breath deeply!!! Breath of a dolphin!!!
